Residents of California and New York have filed lawsuits against the owner of Quaker Oats. The reason: Quaker Oatmeal involves traces of the pesticide glyphosate. This finding came to light when Quaker Oats Quick 1-minute oatmeal underwent a test to analyze its ingredients, by an independent lab in California. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was used for the test, a method common in drug research.
Traces of glyphosate tested positive in the study. The traces were in lower amounts than the legal limit. However, the company was sued for “false advertising” due to its claim of being “100% Natural.” Quaker Oats Company addressed the allegations by denying any use of chemical in the oatmeal. So, it is quite possible that the traces were discovered due to the pesticides sprayed on the oats by farmers.
Their official statement: “Any levels of glyphosate that may remain are trace amounts and significantly below any limits which have been set by the E.P.A. as safe for human consumption.”
Glyphosate is the active ingredient for numerous pesticides, including the worldwide-used, Roundup. Its use has been condemned by food activists for years, with claims that it leads to severe health issues. Yet, ever since its first release in 1974, the popular pesticide, has been used regularly. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO) only recently, in 2015, placed it into the category of “probably” cause of cancer.
Apart from cancer this chemical causes a vast assortment of other long term health issues and complications. If you’re pregnant then please note: experts have concluded that glyphosate interferes in the amounts of Vitamin A, which is crucial for fetal development.
Recent studies have concluded a strong relation between exposure to Roundup and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) in farming communities. Glyphosates also disrupt the functioning of the thyroid hormone/gland.
Furthermore, glyphosates affect the serotonin levels of your body causing you to have irregular sleep, mood swings, appetite loss, and maybe even depression. So, the next time you think of buying any product, and not just of this company, make sure you’re a little more cautious. It’ll go a long way in the long run.
