You know those tiny little white stickers that come with our fruits and vegetables? Normally, we’d tear them right off without a second thought. But hold on, next time you’re about to mindlessly rip the sticker off, take a closer look.

Those tiny stickers aren’t only for the cashier to look up its price. They actually reveal much more than meets the eye. That’s right, those tiny white stickers can tell you exactly how your produce was grown. What was used during the manufacturing process? Was it farm grown, is it chemical fertilizer and insecticide heavy, and is it completely organic? These stickers are vital in revealing just what it is you and your family are consuming.

We shall try our best to give you an understanding on what those small stickers actually mean. Take a close look at the numbers below the “PLU” text.

Four numbers in the PLU: Farmers used the conventional way of harvesting. Produce labelled like this means a number of pesticides were used during the growth and harvest of the yield.
Example: Conventional bananas are labeled 4021, 4201, etc.

Five numbers in the PLU: (Beginning with the number 8): The produce was genetically modified. Labelling like this indicates the use of GMO. In other words, produce like these have been altered in a way that nature couldn’t. This could be the result of a science lab experiment or years of artificial selective breeding.
Example: Genetically modified bananas are labeled 84021, 84201, etc.

Five numbers in the PLU: (Beginning with the number 9): The produce is completely organic. In other words, produce like these are the most healthy and chemical-free among all other counterparts.
Example: Organic Bananas are labelled 94021, 94201, etc.
